The Penguin Party - "Mesherlek" (2014)

"Mesherlek" (2014)

The Penguin Party is back with their finest collection of songs yet! From the opening driving beat of "I Wanna Be A Cult" to the final chorus of "Let's Go Down To The Seaside" - this is a tour de force for this five piece band from Essex in the UK! And while it does comes packaged in a hand-stamped cardboard box, what is contained therein is so far out of the box it's stunning! This is the kind of collection I really love! Not a bad song in the bunch and although they may generally be considered "power pop" there really is no pigeonholing that Penguin Party sound - as the song genres vary from track to track - and every single tune is a gem!

Released just this past July 21st, the deluxe CD (available here) comes with a load of Penguin Party favors! The CD itself looks like a mini-LP and is in it's own album sleeve. Also in the package: a custom guitar pick, a pin/button, a 44-page art paper booklet of lyrics, a silver penguin charm, and even an origami penguin!

Led by senior Penguin, Dave Milligan (vocals/guitars/keys) the rest of the "party" is made up of Gareth Hall (bass/guitar), Jake Milligan (guitar), John Holburn (drums), and the lovely Jan Black on keys and bass.

The band's facebook blurb modestly proclaims:
"Crafty powerpop and alternative rock song-stories for grown-ups. No songs about dancing, drugs or teenage angst here... You'll probably recognise people you know in the lyrics. Reassuringly accessible but with an edge like bitter chocolate.
"Like Ian Dury fronting the Byrds. Like XTC covering Chas'n'Dave. Like Martin Newell joining Madness. Like Kirsty MacColl if she was a bloke from Essex. Like skimming across a pond on a sunny day in an old fashioned rowing boat, dangling your fingers in the water and unexpectedly having one of them bitten off by something just below the surface."

CD is available for digital download purchase at
Also available at most all other digital outlets including
Amazon, iTunes, Napster, etc.
